Back at Pokemon again

iv had good luck with the GBXCart RW when it comes to dumping games and photos from a gameboy camera when i had a Gameboy Phase a while ago (after haveing a playdate for a while and thinking it was definitely inspired by it god i wish that thing had a backlight so bad i have a massive backlog of games for it and its allmost unuseable in my house D: i still kinda love it tho , and also having an addiction to gb tetris on NSO for a bit) and wanted to be able to dump all my Carts i got from modretro first contact protocol was AMAZING and i want to get around to trying to finish it and workout where the other floppy discs are to unlock that minigame and try the Machine by the same dev

New season of life, things have changed and it just doesn’t fit the schedule all too well anymore (and there is nothing wrong with that.) When I hit the grind walls with Pokemon, I’ll usually push it into the more session game box, where I’ll do small bursts of grinding in small, 15-30 minute windows, like when I’m cooking dinner or something. My copy of Emerald is perma-parked at the Battle Frontier for quick runs of the Battle Factory for this exact reason. Maybe keep the game loaded, and make a note or reminder to revisit it in a couple months time to see if it’s meshing then.

“Best” is a bit subjective, and many from that timeline offer really good play experiences. It’s a really good stretch of time for the series, so I don’t really think you can go wrong with grabbing whatever is most accessible to you. My personal suggestion would be Soul Silver & HeartGold Gen2 remakes. I think it has one of the best available post-game experiences beyond just a battle frontier out of any of the games, and is very feature rich. I would maybe avoid Sun & Moon as a new player experience, as that region offers a non-traditional experience (even if I think the game is a solid experience.)

My fiancee and I picked up FireRed & LeafGreen on the Switch ourselves earlier this month. We both have been having a lot of fun with it so far. This is her first time playing Gen 1, as she has really only played the Switch entries up to this point. She got a little stuck at the first gym due to grabbing a Charmander, but she ended up grabbing and leveling a Manky to help breeze through it. Metal Claw and the level gap was also helpful too. I’ve been taking things a little slower on my end so that I keep pace with her a bit better. I definitely have a mentally “solved” route for Gen 1, with how I build my team throughout the game. I’m intentionally fighting this off this time around. I did still stick with my typical Squirtle selection, and fell into my early game trap of grabbing a Manky & Pikachu to help with the first and second gyms— but I also have grabbed both bug types, a Ratata & a Pidgey. I think to help slow me down, I’ll be leveling, evolving, and cycling out Pokemon to both fill out my dex, but also encourage me to carry around some Pokemon I may not normally do. By also trying to level and evolve them for dex entries, it also slows down my progression so I can better keep pass with my fiancee.

Wellp. I might be back at it already.
This time with Sacred Gold, a ROMhack of Heart Gold.
This ROMhack adds gen 4/5 Pokemon, moves, types, etc. some pacing and story changes, etc.
With all the added Pokemon it actually makes the world feel full of wild Pokemon and nature, versus just a couple each route.
I have only just battled Silver and gotten my first Pokeballs (they start you with 15! WHOO!) and I already have a team of Totodile, Eevee, Sentret, Numel, and Starly. WILD stuff.

My kid also just started Soul Silver, so the timing is amusing.
I’m playing this on the AYN Thor, which I’ve been live blogging about: AYN Thor Live Journal
