Back at Pokemon again

My kid finally caught Pokemania, and we’ve been watching through the original anime! Which has been awesome. I missed a LOT of episodes, remember more than I expected.
I finally got to see the Dratini and Porygon episodes that got pulled from air. Kid even tolerated watching them despite not being in English. He liked the intro so much he didn’t want to skip :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
The copy I had of Porygon included the PSA they aired 5 months after Pokemon went off the air because of that episode. Really neat to see and have the historical context. Always heard playground rumors about the episode but had never seen it. Kinda made me emotional.

Alongside that, we started his first game! Let’s Go Eevee. Eevee is now his favorite Pokemon, at the top of a big list of favorites.
Kinda incompetent that you can’t play Let’s Go with a normal controller at all (only the Pokeball, ONE JoyCon, or in handheld mode), but he wanted to use the Pokeball anyway, so it worked out. It’s very awkward to control and a lot of time is wasted fiddling with the menus, however.
We figured out the ā€œco-opā€ mode, which is super jank and tacked on, but is a nice bonding opportunity with battling together (except in… actual double battles?!) and catching together.
I discovered (when thinking we’d play separate copies of Let’s Go, together) that I never actually finished Let’s Go Pikachu, instead abandoning it when Sword & Shield came out, apparently! Need to finish eventually.

I was inspired during all of this to finally start up Fire Red on the Switch - these ports are phenomenal! Patched in the missing content, beautiful on my Switch OLED, and with fast saving and suspend/resume, I don’t even miss the faster speed options of emulator play!
I also… discovered an embarrassing fact…
I’ve been plowing through the game in the past couple weeks, already making my way to Cinnabar Island. BUT… I wound up at Seafoam Islands (surfing from Fuschia City instead of my usual route) and have realized I have maybe never done this content before in any Kanto game.
Now… I’ve played through these games a lot - so it’s quite possible I’ve done it and simply forgot. But I firmly remember that my strategy to get to Cinnabar was always to fly to Pallet Town and surf down from there, even in R/B/Y, so… I’m not sure. I went this way to see what was there, as I’m trying to be completionist/do things differently this run.
And then I stumbled upon Articuno completely by surprise when trying to just navigate through the caves to get to the other side. Level 50, my highest level was 42. I only had 9 Great Balls and 7 Ultra Balls in my possession (plus the Master Ball and maybe 20 PokeBalls, which wouldn’t be useful here). I saved and began the battle, assuming I’d just have to reset and come back later.
But by some crazy chance, I pulled it off! I caught Articuno and made it out of the cave alive, but just barely…

This was a pretty wild experience. I love returning to old familiar games and just challenging myself to do things differently.
This also has me back down the rabbit hole of researching TRUE completionist requirements. I’ve been slowly amassing the things necessary (in a future reply to this post I’ll show off my ā€œPokemon toteā€ with everything packed in) - but I’ve still yet to stomach spending $1500+ on Pokemon Box for the GameCube (I have a modded one, but I like having the real thing on-hand) in NTSC (I have the Japanese one). And NOW I’ve just discovered there was a second version of the Pokemon Colosseum Bonus Disc in Japan, which not only distributed Celebi, but also distributed a Pikachu?!? This one seems pricey to track down, too. UGH.

Anywho, Pokemon is good, Pokemon is great. I hope Nintendo ports ALL of the Game Boy - GBA era games to Switch like this, not just Virtual Console.

I always ditched Butterfree early on, if I ever bothered to raise one, but man this one is so strong.
It’s consistently kicked butt in many battles up to this point, but now it’s basically solo-ing all of Blaine’s gym, despite the type disadvantage. Sleep Powder + Psybeam, the occasional Gust. Boom.

I always have a Butterfree on my team in Gen 1 for this exact kind of reason.

Pokemania has really hit my household recently as well. I grew up with the games, but my fiancee never really interacted much during her youth. She got really into TCG collecting about a year or so ago, and that’s blossomed into quite the hyper fixation for her (and in turn has sucked me back into it.) It’s on my to-do list to get a modded handheld system available for her to play through more of the earlier generations, as she’s really only played the Switch entries (and various spinoffs) at this point. We also got back into Pokemon Go lately, mainly because we also went to the Pokemon Fossil Exhibit in Chicago and our friend really pushed it on us due to there being (yet another) limited edition costume Pickachu. Regardless, it’s been a good way to gamify walking for the two of us, it’s something we both always appreciated through our couple of stints with it.

Quick side note, the Fossil Exhibit was really rad. It was a little short for what it was, and a little bit of a pain to get into with it being an add-on ticket with timed entry. Merch was insanely expensive as well, go figure. But overall, I really appreciated the ways in which they connected real life fossils to fossil Pokemon. They did this sort of clever labeling to distinguish real life/Pokemon world, and consistently paired the Pokemon with the fossils they are inspired by.

I had the exact same experience with the Let’s Go games as well. I initially picked it up hoping it could be something her & I could play together years ago, but it didn’t really hook her at the time, and I bounced off of it because I didn’t really like the change up with the catching mechanic. Dropped it for Sword & Shield, which burnt me out until more recently.

AHHHHHH I really wanna go to the fossil museum!

A feat I could never even pretend to dream of actually achieving, but pretty bananas to watch other people do:

Only skimmed this for now, but VERY fascinating look into early Pokemon coverage and media:

It’s worth considering the original Nintendo 2DS (the slab), a modded one can play everything from the Game Boy to 3DS and hasn’t seen the same price explosion as the other 3DS models. And it’s not like the 3DS games made much use of 3D anyway.

Plus, as someone who used to have one as a kid, I can attest to the fact that despite looking a bit ridiculous it is surprisingly ergonomic.

Well worth the trip. Was about a 4 hour drive for us, but a bunch of friends & I made it a weekend trip to Chicago for the 4th of July weekend. With your kid getting Pokemania, it could be a pretty good excuse to take a trip that way. Besides, Field Museum is an awesome trip all on it’s own.

Collector Dex’s are insanely cool, but I’m also in the same boat of recognizing that there is absolutely no way I could even see myself doing something like that, I know I would lose steam with it. I got massive respect for individuals who are able to stick with something like that to such a degree, and envy their ability to focus and stay on track with such a long, drawn out goal. Couldn’t be me though.

I find my little happy place with it all is in playing the original carts on original hardware. Have a handful of classic Nintendo handhelds myself with cartridges that I love to pop into for quick play sessions. I keep my DS in my every day carry bag at this point for out-of-house session play (I have my copy of Emerald beaten and stationed at the Battle Frontier for quick little runs, as well as Platinum just past the first gym as I slowly chip away at it.) At some point I do want to go through the daisy chain trading process to bring something from my copy of Red into Pokemon Home, but that’s probably going to be a one-and-done thing as I’m more interested in experiencing that process as opposed to actually trying to get everything into Pokemon Home (this might change if I ever end up getting into Champions pretty heavily.) Ultimately, I think my long term process with Pokemon collecting will fall more into just backing up my save files instead of exporting the mons, and keeping them contained in their cartridges alone. (I’ve been eyeballing the GB Operator from Epilogue for a little while as a backup solution, along with some nice looking software benefits [with Linux support  ] but if people are aware of some better options, or have some words of caution, I would love to hear your perspective.) Growing up, trading and link play were never really something I got to experience out of one or two times. So, the games always ended up being a very contained experience for me, the mons in that generation were what I had to work with. At this point, those restrictions have just developed into a personal play preference, where I like the restriction of only using mons from that generation, it helps me feel more connected to that specific region & version of the game.

I’ll add that Pokemon History video to my watch later list to throw on during work and loop back on it. :head_shaking_vertically:

I’ll keep my eyes peeled for a slab then! I have done some repair & reshelling work on Gameboys in the recent past, so I’m really infatuated with the idea of jumping back in on a project like that and building her a custom one though. But a good deal on a slab is undoubtedly a great here and now solution, and with it being garage sale season hopefully I can find one at a good price here soon.

I originally preferred the Submodule GB01 just to support a smaller group and developer and such, but it’s been discontinued.
The Epilogue GB Operator is great! I don’t think there’s really anything specific to warn about; it’s pretty self-explanatory and simple to use, plus it has emulator play built-in.

I got the bug too. I originally fired up my 3DS for New Super Mario Bros. 2, and because I tend to gravitate to one system at a time I got sucked back into the 3DS and spun up a new playthrough of Alpha Sapphire.

I’m not very far at the moment, no gym badges and my team is just Nugget the Torchic, Shade the Poovhyana and Serenity the Ralts.

The 3DS is awesome for Pokemon! Well it is awesome in general, but the Pokemon games on there are amazing. I’ve been playing Pokemon X from time to time and I’ve been loving it. As a kid, I was never really into Pokemon, but I can definitely see why so many people were/are. Those are some awesome names for your Pokemon btw!

Thanks. I feel like giving my team nicknames helps with the immersion, even the really on the nose ones.

True that. I always struggle with this though, since I overthink it way too hard and try to keep every name in a certain theme. On my playthrough, I ended up giving my Pokemon like ā€œolder generationā€ male names (f.e. Walter, Danny, Frits, …) but this ended up confusing the heck out of me since I couldn’t remember which Pokemon I gave which name. Next time, I’ll probably try to free ball it a bit more

I once had a team of entirely Sp- nicknames. Except for the Mankey I called Michael.

Michael the Mankey lmao, I like that name a lot. I hope they gave a raise to the person at Pokemon that had the idea of the feature to nickname Pokemon, such a good feature

I wrapped up all 8 badges, the first 3 Sevii Islands quests, and am making my way through Victory Road!
I’ve had some team swaps. Originally was using Lapras for Surf, then caught a Poliwirl (named it WHIRLIE) to use for Surf and evolve into Poliwrath once it learns a move.
BUT after getting it to like level 38, nearly caught up with my team and able to actually partake in battles, I encountered one with the Water Absorb ability that I wanted (turns water moves used against it into healing) so now it’s dragging down my party EXP again as I make my way through Victory Road. Only just got to level 30. Named it WHIRLIEv2.

I really wish there was an easier way for me to get screenshots off my Switch without fully powering it down, taking out the microSD card, etc.

Still really impressed by this port. Suspend/Resume is a game changer for these already-handheld games and I don’t miss fast-forward (from emulators) at all. My PokĆ©dex is up to 71 caught and I’m excited at the potential of actually completing the Kanto Dex eventually.
My biggest complaint is that after beating this, I’m NOT going to want to dive right into Leaf Green and do it all again and would really rather have R/S/E to jump into on here to make progress in and trade between.
Thankfully I have 2 Switches so I should be able to trade between FR and LG at least, but c’mon Nintendo, get it together!

I think it might be possible to use the ā€œSend to Phoneā€ feature of the Switch to get the screenshots.

It basically turns the Switch into a WiFi hotspot that you connect to and open a link in a browser. It is intended to be used by scanning QR codes, but they do have the option to sign into the hotspot and navigate to the webpage directly.

I’m not sure if this would be easier than using the micro SD in practice. The webpage always has the same link, so it could be bookmarked, but I don’t know if the password for the hotspot changes each time or not.

Yeah I’m not sure how much better that would be. Maybe save me from interrupting my session to fully shut down. I’ll try it. Syncing from Switch to Phone to PC sounds exhausting haha
And then I’d worry about compression stages.

The PokeMania has worn off…
Not sure whether it’s my kid being back in school and us watching/playing less together or just having done ā€œenough for nowā€ - or hitting the wall with my Elite Four battles and struggling to find good enough grind spots, but I’ve lost my motivation. I’ve been keeping my Switch charged with my save state open for a few weeks now, but it’s time to let it rest a bit. Was hoping to beat the E4 and do more end-game stuff, but maybe next time.
