Anyone have experiences backing up wikis and other knowledge sites effectively?
Everyone just talks about Kiwix - which seems FANTASTIC for sure, but my gut reaction is always to be concerned about losing access to the app and the files becoming useless.
Any more tangible/less locked up options?
Second question would be: How would I make my own WordPress based site easily downloadable/accessible to someone offline?
Found an alternative that I will run alongside Kiwix. GitHub - WikiTeam/wikiteam: Tools for downloading and preserving wikis. We archive wikis, from Wikipedia to tiniest wikis. As of 2024, WikiTeam has preserved more than 600,000 wikis.

I’m new to Kiwix having only set up my own instance in a Proxmox LXC a couple of weeks ago, but, I don’t think your fears are entirely founded. Kiwix is a zim reader/server - you can read zim files without it (though I haven’t tried).
If you’re self-hosting your own kiwix instance then there’s no reliance on anything external. You could back up the docker images/whichever install medium you used so even if you had to rebuild entirely without internet access you’d be able to.
On a related note, I watched a video on a kiwix build just yesterday - it’s pretty dang cool. Though, if I was going to do something similar (I’ve added it to my ADHD project list, glgl) I’d want to include a hand crank + solar panels for charging just for total redundancy. It would likely never be needed but it just doesn’t feel complete to me if it’s not 100% self-sufficient.
Thank you! I knew I was missing something obvious, but I hadn’t heard of/looked into zim files yet. Good to know. I shall proceed.
