Skill-Based Matchmaking vs Connection-based Matchmaking

I know it’s been said a millions times and I’m being a bit of a broken record, but after giving PvP games another go with some friends I’ve quickly been reminded just how horrendous the experience is in some games because of SBMM. It’s so frustrating because I don’t care too much about SBMM itself, and it could be fun, but because they seemingly ignore the quality of my connection I get game after game where it’s unplayable solely because my ping is constantly spiking from 20 to 500 and I’m rubberbanding every 2 seconds. Has anyone else had a similar experience, where it feels like you’re fighting the game more than other players?

Guess I’ll have to start looking into games with server browsers instead.

It seems like whenever they put a computer in charge it makes multiplayer games less fun. I know that cheaters like to mess with their connections to get a better games that they can win, but I think these kind of experiences should be focused on legitimate players wanting a good experience. If I get killed by a cheater then yeah that sucks, but if I get killed because my connection to the server is really bad then I’d be more upset for sure. Give me a good gaming experience and try to handle cheaters a different way.

EDIT: This post is based on the assumption the game dev is avoiding connection-based matchmaking because cheaters abuse it.
