I’d really like to build a new gaming PC in the next ~12 months, but I have a few requirements:
Small Form Factor. Something like the Fractal Design Ridge
Linux, absolutely won’t tolerate Windows anymore. I’ve been using Bazzite on my current build after ditching Windows and having an overall good experience.
Beefy specs; I’d love to run newer games at 4K with a 60fps base target
Secondary goals -
Support Steam Link and/or Moonlight; right now I think my Nvidia 2060 doesn’t play nice with remote play on Bazzite. I’d love to have it, but won’t tolerate Windows to get it.
Game Capture, both extnernal devices and on-device window capture/streaming. I have an Elgato 4k60 PCE Card, but it doesn’t play nice with Linux either. Would like to repurpose it, but I suppose just going another HW route would probably be more realistic. TBH though I’m fine to just give up on this goal altogether.
Any suggestions from people experienced with a Linux-first gaming build that I should consider before really digging into it?
lol no worries. I actually just did and it will be arriving tomorrow! I went with the 395 and 128GB of RAM, which now seems like an incredible call on my part given RAM prices right now.
I happen to work for an OEM that is soon producing an “Edge AI Compute” device for enterprises. It’s basically just a nice gaming PC in a housing that’ll be convenient for enterprise; it’ll have an Intel i9+ Nvidia 5090. I work in a position where I actually get samples of all new products, so there’s really solid chance that some time in the next 6 months that will end up replacing the framework as my all-purpose desktop and gaming PC, and the framework will move to my living room as a family Steam Machine.
Welp, got held up in a “clearance delay” so i won’t be able to set it up until after i get back from a work trip next Thursday. I’ll let you now how it goes!
First off, this was clearly a brilliant move on my part; the timing was great. The Framework is awesome.
I ended up getting the work device, which is now my main desktop and moved the framework to the living room as planned and it’s an excellent Steam Machine. My daughter has been playing Dragon Quest XI S - Echoes of and Elusive Age Definitive Edition on it nightly and that’s been awesome!
