Lav mics are driving me INSANE! (video)

Alright so I’m in a weird pickle and want some advice…

I’ve now been with three different lav mic kits:

  • RODE Wireless PRO (and Go II)
  • Deity Interview Kit
  • Sennheiser Profile wireless kit

The Sennheiser and RODE both support 32-bit float - very nice. The Sennheiser was my favorite-sounding of the two badge-style (better than the RODE), but it’s having some glitching on the internal recording of both mics, so I’ve been back on the RODE kit.

The problem is I do not like how they sound at all.

I’ve been down this rabbit hole before, though. I really liked Deity’s interview lav kit, but couldn’t come to terms with not liking how the lavs sounded. I got some headset style mic for them, then bought the Sennheiser MKE 2 Lav mic for like $225 - only to realize it was XLR and (even with an adapter) the Deity kit couldn’t not power it.

Neither can the RODEs. Neither could a ZOOM F2 recorder that I bought and since have sold.

So now I’m left with an awkward decision: Do I buy the Countryman B6 Lav that comes highly recommended and plug it into any of my existing kits, or do I buy a TASCAM portable recorder that has XLR (and 32-bit float) and would fit mostly in my pocket (or on my belt) while powering the Sennheiser Lav I already own?

Both choices involve spending about $400 for a mostly-redundant piece of gear to solve my problem. It’s just a matter of which side of the chain I’m buying.

I’ve reached out to TASCAM about a review sample of the recorder, but I’m not expecting to hear back.

Anyone with experience got advice?

Alright, rabbit hole already delved. Here’s a video:

It’s worth noting that even in the processed samples here, I did NOT do ANY noise removal/reduction just to keep it a little pure. Normally I’d have Resolve’s AI noise isolation present removing all that server noise.
