We had a discussion on Discord recently about the Deadpool and the Wolverine movie. There are a lot of videos going up now about how bad it “actually is” and how it “gets worse each time you watch it.”
I say fuck that. Video essay nerds won’t take away a movie that was super meaningful to me. So while I don’t feel like rewriting everything in nice, essay form, I did want to share the thoughts I had wrote on Discord in a more permanent place.
Dude there’s a lot to the Deadpool watching experience that I feel like the nerds really don’t get.
Like ESPECIALLY with this one, holy fuck.
Deadpool is grasping at his last chance to stick around, to be with the people he loves making the movies he likes being in.
While the TVA is trying to erase him so that everything can adhere to the canon series of events?
When he doesn’t WANT us to forget all of the cool badass characters that came around BEFORE the LITERAL LORE POLICE showed up - including people who never got their deserved flowers or solo films that were planned???
The whole movie is the most meta commentary shit on a deeper fourth-wall-breaking way than his silly jokes ever actually do.
And then yes you feel empathy for Deadpool because DEADPOOL IS ME: The average viewer who just wants cool comic book shit to happen, and to hold some awareness that these are goofy comic book movies about superheroes fighting each other - and not strict lore-tied literature.
Starting the movie with “that’s not how healing factors work, idiots” nerding out to ending with BTS clips from all the Fox movies…
Bro it doesn’t get better than this
There will not be a Marvel movie that outright fucking TOUCHED ME in a way Deadpool & Wolverine did. It’s 100% fan service in the face of corporate control of the entire premise and you’re never getting that again under Disney.
Even future Deadpool films (if they ever do any; Ryan does not want to) will be more soulless compared to this.
