How to organize inspo files?

how in the HELL do I organize all the photos, screenshots, and video clips I’ve saved for reference/inspiration? There’s no modern file storage system that supports tagging and stuff anymore like Windows Vista tried to make happen. Even Adobe Bridge is trash now. What do?!

I have a private Discord server w/ >100 channels in an attempt to organize this, but I don’t want it under someone else’s control and want it local. Plus it doesn’t cover me for any intersectional pieces, and is a nightmare to scroll back on.

If you’re still okay with a bit of jank, setting up an obsidian vault might be an option. Similar to hoe you have Discord set up, have broad categories split up into folders and have your media tagged for some crossover when searching. That way its all local on your machine. You can even a canvas as a local moodboard.

The only problem I’ve ran into well trying this is that for you to tag your media, you need to embed an image/video into a markdown file as there is no way atm to tag media directly to my knowledge. Which will make two entries in the vault, the media file itself (denoted with its exention), and the markdown that has the embedding file which might look messier than you might want.

I have also been reading about Copyparty having some tagging support, but that’s more for used for a file server.

I am hoping to get obsidian set up, I just originally got turned off by the mess of trying to self-host sync

This may be more frustrating than it’s worth, but you could look at Darktable. It’s basically an opensource equivalent to Adobe Lightroom. I’m guessing one of your limitations will be Darktable only works for local files. I don’t think you are going to be able to link to stuff on the web and tag them.

You know, I hadn’t considered using a LR/DT style program for this. Might be overkill, but the tagging is there! Local files is not a problem for a limitation. HMMMMM. Thanks

Yeah, I dont blame you there. Outside of their own syncing service it can be rough. I was using Syncthing to sync for awhile until I got lazy about it. Might give that ago again once i re-organize my mess of hard drive(s) and obsidian vault.

May also give that Darktable a try.
