_This topic is something I’ve had sloshing around in my head for a while now._

I’ve noticed that ever since something like 2019 I’ve spent more time per year, on average, playing mods than actual retail games. And when I say “mods” I don’t mean stuff like “Replacing all the dragons in Skyrim with Thomas the Tank Engine”. I’m talking like full on total-conversion, community made remakes or rewords of actual retail games.

Things like the famed Skyrim mod “The Forgotten City”, Stalker Anomaly (GAMMA, Escape from Pripyat, Zona), StarCraft Mass Recall and StarCraft Evo, UED First Light, Warcraft Azeroth Reborn and Chronicles of the Second War, Black Mesa Blue Shift… Even the thing I’m currently playing, which is Bloodborne running natively on PC; the recently released mod by “Super Medo” (whoever they are), can count as one of those, though only marginally.

Projects for which people in the community of those games made some real and substantial effort to bring a vision to fruition, that the original developers either don’t want or aren’t able to provide themselves. Passion projects made with maximum commitment for love and zero monetary incentive. Some of those things truly boggle the mind and even after so many years I still regularly get taken aback by how creative and dedicated people can be when they legitimately care about something; a world, a game, an IP.

“Mods” isn’t even the correct term for those things, because it doesn’t begin to do justice to the amount of work and creativity that the people making them put forth. We need a new word for it, but I can’t come up with one. The best I got is “Folk games”.

This of course is not a new phenomenon or development, but I only really became aware of it around 2019 because before I lived in a bubble comprised of Halo and Destiny xD

Some of the most popular and widely known games came directly from the modding scene.

- **MOBAs:** “Defence of the Ancients” was literally a fan made mod for Warcraft 3, based on a StarCraft Brood War mod called “Eon of Strife”. Today it’s one of the most played and most lucrative competitive eSports genres, represented by titles almost everyone has at least heard off, Dota 2 and League of Legends.
- P **UBG:** The game which literally started the Battle Royale craze of the late 2010s began as a very janky but ultimately highly popular mod for DayZ.
- **Black Mesa:** A community project originally stared with the goal of making a better remake of the original Half Life in the source engine, because Valve’s initial attempt was lacking in many ways. Eventually, it released as a full retail product that even got the blessing of Valve themselves.

Other games literally make “_community made content_” their whole business and appeal model. Two of the most popular ones are of course Minecraft and Roblox, even though other examples exist.

What I believe made the rise of the mods I mentioned, and many others I’m not even aware of, possible is the advancements in hardware power as well as the proliferation of high bandwidth internet connections globally. Those are truly crowd sourced games / projects. I always say that the biggest and most powerful tool we have today is the “collective hive mind of the internet”. And just like all other powerful tools, it can be extremely dangerous, but also capable of some real miracles.

_ **Take Stalker Anomaly as an example.** _

At the bottom of the post I’ll put short descriptions (or sales pitches lol) for the mods I mentioned in the beginning, so that those unfamiliar can learn more and maybe seek them out themselves.

In 2011 the developers of the Stalker games, GSC Game World, made their in house Xray engine publicly available to download and play around with. Originally, that engine was a complete disaster. It was single threaded and had more bugs than useful features, to the point that it’s a miracle GSC even managed to release 3 full games with it. However, since then the community “maniacs” managed to do several things with it, including but not limited to:

- Converting it to 64 bit
- Adding script and mod support
- Combining all the areas from all 3 games into one big, open world map
- Allow for adding higher resolution textures and higher fidelity animations
- Making all the various factions in the zone playable
- Writing a whole new campaign, with missions
- Adding an unlimited amount of repeatable and randomly generated quests
- Significantly improving on the A-Life system, which is a fully simulated AI system for all inhabitants of the zone (human or beast) to have goals and move around the map independently of the player
- Simulating a real life “social network” feed that constantly makes observations and simulated communication by all the AI inside the “Zone”. It’s like a Twitter feed on the side of the UI.
- And recently, some even crazier people finally managed to program in actual multi-threading support into the engine, meaning the game now makes use of more than one CPU core, which is HUGE. MONUMENTAL really.

This took years and years and is still ongoing, but it resulted in Stalker Anomaly being a fully playable, open world Stalker game from start to finish, that is in many ways a sequel to the original trilogy and a prequel to Stalker 2. You can literally download, instal and play Stalker Anomaly as is, directly from moddb. Zero money required. It’s all free and it’s all fully legal.

That being said, Anomaly was really just a platform; a canvas for more in-depth mods that the community could expand on in the future. And expand it did.

Somewhere at the end of 2021, one particular Stalker modder named Grok released Stalker GAMMA, and “this is where the fun began”. GAMMA stands for “Grok’s Automated Modular Modpack for Anomaly“. In it’s current form, GAMMA includes 577 mods (without crashing often or setting your PC on fire) and it houses one of the most detailed and comprehensive crafting systems in any game ever. You can break down almost anything you find in the game and use it to make something else, which includes: guns, armour, ammo, medicine, shelter supplies, items, furniture and food. Most components also have durability, meaning you can fix them and get them to 100%, for a time, until they break again. The core idea is that vendors in the Zone don’t sell any weapons or armour anymore because canonically the Military (a faction that you can actually play yourself) clamped down on smuggling into the Zone, so nothing comes in. If you want a better gun you have to either find it somewhere or take it from someone and then repair it yourself, with parts from other guns or bought from vendors (if you’ve got the money). And if that wasn’t crazy enough, there is a whole body health system ripped straight from Escape from Tarkov (literally), where you don’t just “get shot”. You get shot in one or more 7 distinct places on your body (head, thorax, torso, arms and or legs), and patching yourself up isn’t as simple as “heal”. You need to stop the bleeding first, then apply pre-heal items which only heal temporarily, after which you actually need the proper post-heal items to actually restore the wounded limb back to functioning status. If you don’t then your aim will not be stable when you arms are damaged and you’ll hobble and make your leg fracture worse when you walk and run. It’s insane. The keybinds rival ArmA in how many buttons can do what. And yet somehow, it’s all seamless. Grok is still actively working on this and collaborating with other mod makers (gun animations, weather patters, foliage and textures) by updating their own code so that it works with all the other mods and doesn’t break. Did I mention there are currently 577! mods running concurrently in GAMMA? Oh, I did.

Why am I telling you all this? Is this a GAMMA bait post? Maybe xD

I’m telling you this to illustrate how comprehensive this game / project (that you might never have head of) is. There is no studio in the world that could pull this off, not only because they don’t have the manpower, time and budget, but also because some of those features contain what the industry likes to call “friction”. The new player onboarding is almost non-existent. There is a glossary of all features in GAMMA, but who the hell likes to read. However, if you’re down for this stuff, you’ll be down for GAMMA. It’s endless. You can spend hundreds of hours playing this mod, without ever finishing the main story and just wander around the zone, doing quests, making money, finding gear and exploring the zone. This IS “emergent gameplay” in the truest sense of the world. Almost nothing is scripted and things will happen in your playthrough that will be completely unique to you alone. I still can’t believe this exists and is completely free. You can even get it on GOG, if you own Stalker Call of Pripyat or Stalker 2. It unlocks and is a literal one-click download. Or you just download it from moddb and the official discord channel with no money needed.

Oh yeah, there’s also difficulty settings for both gameplay and economy, so if you want to chill in the zone while not getting paid pennies for quest, you can make it easier on yourself. But if you do like to suffer, then go for Hardcore Survivalist.

If you have any similar mods that you love playing, please let me know. I’d love to fall in love with more of these projects, because as I said in the beginning, they do take up most of my gaming time. Why? Because I know there is no boardroom, no executives, no dark patterns, no audience testing, no market research or shady monetization behind it. Just passion and love for the game(s).

As promised, here’s a shot breakdown of the mods I play the most and that I mentioned in the beginning:

- **Stalker Anomaly**
  - _ **Requirements** _\*\*:\*\* None, download it from moddb
  - _ **What is it** _\*\*:\*\* Total conversion mod for Stalker, with an open world made up of all the zones from all 3 mainline games, with a story that follows you, as the player, hunting Strelok across the Zone. Takes place after the events of the 3rd game, Call of Pripyat. And you don’t need to play the og games to understand this.
  - _ **Notable versions** _\*\*:\*\* GAMMA (the best one), Escape from Pripyat (more action focused), Zona (the newest mod, with more emphasis on the open world, and less crafting)

- **Black Mesa Blue Shift**
  - _ **Requirements:** _ Purchasing Black Mesa on Steam
  - _ **What is it:** _ A remake of the original Half Life Blue Shift Expansion, which follows the security guard Barnie, on his own journey parallel to the events of Half Life, as seen by Gordon Freeman.
  - 6 out of 8 chapters have been released

- Warcraft mods
  - **Azeroth Reborn**
    - _ **Requirements:** _ The base, free to play version of StarCraft 2 (Wings of Liberty) from [battle.net](http://battle.net)
    - _ **What is it:** _ A full remake of Warcraft 3 and The Frozen Throne using the StarCraft 2 engine. Cutscenes, cinematics, original graphics, but including the QoL features of StarCraft 2
    - It was made as a response to the disastrous state of WarCraft 3 Reforged, by ONE PERSON

  - **Chronicles of the Second War**
    - _ **Requirements:** _ Warcraft 3 Reforged
    - _ **What is it:** _ A remake of the Warcraft 2 story campaign using the Warcraft 3 Reforged engine, with full voice acting, new cutscenes and reimagined missions, because WC2 is old as hell
    - Currently only the Orc campaign is complete; the Human campaign is in developement

- StarCraft mods
  - **Mass Recall**
    - _ **Requirements:** _ The base, free to play version of StarCraft 2 (Wings of Liberty) from [battle.net](http://battle.net)
    - _ **What is is:** _ A full remake of StarCraft 1 and Brood War using the StarCraft 2 engine. Original cutscenes, voice lines and missions redesigned as close to the originals as possible, but using the StarCraft 2 QoL features and some, minor creative liberties in mission design. Also includes new in-engine cutscenes for the beginning and end of missions, because SC1 came out in 1998.
    - Completely playable from first to last mission, includes difficulty settings not present in the original game

  - **UED: First Light**
    - _ **Requirements:** _ The base, free to play version of StarCraft 2 (Wings of Liberty) from [battle.net](http://battle.net)
    - _ **What is it:** _ An original campaign following the story of the United Earth Directorate, predating the events of of Brood War, written by one of the main lore-masters of the StarCraft community (Subsorian), with cinematics and full voice acting. Basically a prequel to StarCraft 1.

  - **EVO**
    - _ **Requirements:** _ The base, free to play version of StarCraft 2 (Wings of Liberty) from [battle.net](http://battle.net)
    - _ **What is it:** _ EVO is another, more in-depth remake of StarCraft 1, split into two parts:
      - _Single player:_ While Mass Recall took some liberties, EVO aims to be more closely aligned with the original design and spirit of SC1 and BW, and also includes achievements, and tons of feature customization, including but not limited to simulating the janky but beloved awful pathfinding of the SC1 units
      - _Multiplayer:_ Combines StarCraft Brood War and StarCraft 2 “races”, with their own units and balancing, playable together or against each other, in 1v1, 2v2, and 4v4. Also comes with its own ranked ladder system.

  - **Nightmare mode**
    - _ **Requirements:** _ The base, free to play version of StarCraft 2 (Wings of Liberty) from [battle.net](http://battle.net)
    - _ **What is it:** _ If SC2’s Brutal difficulty is too easy for you, two guys (GiantGrantGames and TheRealRhyme) rebalanced the units and enemy AI to make a much harder version of all 3 StarCraft 2 expansions, by nerfing the OP units and strategies, while buffing the weak ones, and also removing any and all cheese strategies on each mission. You can also play all the missions on lower difficulties with all the rebalanced stuff. Pretty cool.

I still can’t believe all of this is free and made by people in their free time. I guess boredom really is a good motivator.

Chime in with any mods you play or thoughts on those that I mentioned? Any of them peak your interest?

I quite like Sonic Megamix Mania. It’s a full remake and reimagining of the famous Sonic 1 hack Sonic Megamix in Sonic Mania Plus. You’ve got 6 new zones (inspired by the zones of Sonic 1) which remix enemies, gimmicks and bosses from Sonic Mania to make what feels like the closest thing we will get to Sonic Mania 2.

And on top of this we have a challenge mode that lets you play a remixed version of each act with a unique challenge, such as playing a harder version of the stage mirrored.

And if that isn’t enough, there is also Classic Mode. Which is a partial remake of the original ROM hack (specifically 4.0 with some elements of 5.0b).

really enjoyed what iv. played of [Sim settlements 2](https://simsettlements2.com/) half a year or more ago i dont remember (before chapter 3 came out i think? really cool having a settlements being able to build themselfs and being able to resettle the commonwelth without being massivre PITA and a decently fun story crazy how theve mannaged to turn fallout 4 into an actual city builder! shame fallout 4 actuively tries to off it self when ever i play it for whatever reason nowdays no matter what mods im playing with 😕

thinking after i give another one of the games my sis got my for my bday a while back but after that i might give [Better Then Adventure](https://www.betterthanadventure.net/) another go is a fork of minecraft beta 1.7.3 i played a while back thinking it was a fork of regular 1.7.3 (the version i think i started playing minecraft at but im not 100% sure anymore) where the continue the game as they see fit or something idk , im not super fermuler with the project but i did run a little server for it that me and my sister played on a while ago and reminded me of when i enjoyed minecraft a little more just playing the base game instead of getting distracted by 300 mods (like create and its addons and being able to make fully functional airships or those fun tubes to travel in from satisfactory) and being lost in JEI all the time and it was super nice i still think a lot of those mods are good but most of the time it was to much and it was a good reminder i should probably take a brake from em or something. but they just had there own nether update and i wouild like to update the server to it and maybe continue where we left off i think our base is probably covered in snow since one of the features is seasons and thats about when we stoped.. or i might check out the [legacy4j](https://modrinth.com/mod/legacy4j) project that adds most if not all the features from the old console versions of the game and try a later version of the game

The Quake 3 era of mods was a pretty incredible time. So many FPS games ran on the engine. The level building and scripting tools were some of the easiest to understand, which resulted in a huge number of mods, custom levels, and total conversions. Here is only a few I remember.

- True Combat: a total conversion mod that turned Quake 3 into a modern tactical shooter. It looked similar to Counter Strike, but played a lot faster.
- Swat: a total conversion mod for Call of Duty 1 that played similarly to CS.
- Elite Force RPG: Do you like Star Trek? Do you like Role Playing? This mod for Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force turned the deathmatch style multiplayer into a RP sandbox for you and your friends.
- Star Trek the Argas Effect: a total conversion single-player mod for Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force that put you in the uniform of James T. Kirk and had you playing through an original story as if it were an episode of season 4. While writing this, I discovered Act 2 of the mod was released in 2020, over 10 years after the original release of Act 1.
- Call of Duty 1 CTF: this wasn’t a total conversion, but was a fun multiplayer gamemode created by the community. The United Offensive expansion pack officially added CTF later.

Elite Force was an absolute masterpiece banger. As a fan of Voyager, I remember being able to walk around the ship and talking to the crew.
